  • The monthly salary of 150,000 yen for research project labor helps to pay living expenses.
  • *A portion of this wage’s taxes must be paid.
  • A 150,000 yen stipend is available to cover living and travel costs. (Only available to foreign applicants who live outside of Japan and who now hold or plan to acquire the status of “Student” of Japanese residence at the time of arrival.)

Eligibility Criteria for Special Scholarship Program

Applicants must meet the following conditions to be considered:

  • Doctoral Enrollment: Must commit to a three-year PhD program at KUT.
  • Supervisor’s Approval: Applicants need to secure permission from the project leader of their chosen SSP research project before applying.
  • Educational Qualification: Completion of 18 years of education with a degree equivalent to a master’s degree from a recognized institution, or be on track to complete it before the official enrollment date.
  • Age Preference: Ideally, candidates should be younger than 35 years at the time of admission.
  • Academic Record: Should have a strong academic background with excellent undergraduate and postgraduate performance from reputable universities.
  • Research Commitment: Must be ready to dedicate themselves fully to the selected research project, possessing the required research knowledge and skills.
  • English Proficiency: Applicants must demonstrate strong English ability with one of the following minimum scores:
    • TOEFL iBT: 72
    • IELTS: 5.5
    • CEFR: B2 level
    • CET-6: Acceptable for Chinese students

Documents/Material Required to Apply

Applicants must prepare the following documents for submission:

  1. Confirmation from Supervisor
    • A copy of an email or official message showing the project leader’s approval to apply.
  2. Pre-Application Form
    • A signed pre-application request.
  3. Transcripts & Certificates
    • Bachelor’s transcript (English or Japanese).
    • Master’s transcript (English or Japanese).
    • Master’s degree certificate (English or Japanese).
  4. Research Materials
    • A copy of the master’s thesis (in English).
    • A research proposal/outline for the intended study at KUT.
  5. Recommendation Letters
    • Two signed recommendation letters (English or Japanese).
  6. Health Verification
    • A medical certificate issued within the past six months (English or Japanese).
  7. Proof of English Proficiency
    • Valid test results from TOEFL, IELTS, CET-6, or WSK.

Application Procedure for SSP at KUT

  1. Choose a Research Project
    • Review the list of available SSP research projects and select the one that best matches your academic background and research interests.
  2. Submit a Pre-Application Request
    • Complete the Online Pre-Application Request Form provided by KUT and send it directly to the supervisor of your chosen project.
    • Obtain formal approval from the project leader before proceeding further.
    • Applicants are not allowed to submit more than one Pre-Application Request per intake.
    • If your request is declined, please note that you may not receive any reply from the project leader.
  3. Prepare and Send Required Documents
    • Once approval is granted, gather all the required documents as specified by KUT.
    • Submit the complete application package to KUT by post, ensuring it arrives before the deadline.
